Lathe Turned Lidded Container
of Harvested Cherry

The removal of a large cherry tree from our yard prompted the purchase of a lathe, in order to reclaim some of the valuable wood from the chipper. This is my first lathe project - a greenwood cherry lidded vessel. Finish is lacquer and paste wax.

Lathe Turned Pencil Cup
of Spalted Birch

This item was turned from a small log of paper birch brought home from a local park as firewood. It sat out in the weather for a year, where the spalting occurred. I rescued it from the fireplace apron one chilly evening - totally dry, feather-weight, and about half-decomposed. It was fairly difficult to turn, as the wood was dry and brittle. The finish is lacquer and paste wax.

Wooden Bowl
of Green Cherry

This item was turned from a small slice of wild cherry. It was destined to be burned in the fireplace, but I kept eyeing the thickness of one portion. Hmmm... just enough for one small bowl. Although the material was pretty dry, some warpage occurred after turning. Finish is paste wax.

This is a bottom view. This was my first attempt to turn an object on a homemade center screw faceplate. It was not a particularly successful experiment. A good scroll chuck is definitely in order...

This goblet was turned from an unknown piece of green wood removed from a neighbor's yard after an ice storm. This time around, I used a Super Nova II Scroll Chuck to hold the blank while turning.

Wine Glass-Unfinished
of Spalted Birch

This wine glass was turned from a small log of spalted birch that was originally destined for the fireplace. It is somewhat difficult to turn spalted woods without them disintegrating. This is probably one of the better finished pieces I have done, but the shape wasn't quite what I wanted. The decomposing wood had it's own ideas as to how it would be shaped.

This is the above wine glass with a clear lacquer and paste wax finish. It was sanded briefly to 600 grit and wiped with a thin coat of lacquer which was barely dry before waxing.

Flower Vase
of Spalted Oak

I actually began with a general idea of what I wanted when I started this project. Spring is upon us, and we needed a vase in which to place freshly cut flowers. It was turned from spalted oak recovered from a local park. Most of the wood had deteriorated over the winter, but this piece still had some integrity - in fact, it was a real bear to hollow the interior. This is not only the deepest vessel I have ever attempted, but it has the narrowest opening and is my first oak turning as well. It was simply sanded lightly and wiped with a coat of Tung Oil. I might apply a coat of lacquer in the future.

Segmented Dish
of Maple and Walnut

This is my first attempt a turning a segmented platter or dish. It was created from a total of 36 segments of walnut and maple. It measures 9 1/2" in diameter and is 1 7/8" tall, and was turned on a 10" swing lathe.

Deep Wooden Bowl
of Wild Grained Cherry

This item was turned from a log of wild cherry removed from our yard. This was roughed out and left to sit about six months before final turning. Hopefully, it won't warp as the others have done. The grain is wild and speckled. Finish is tung oil.

Accessory Pod for Delta Lathe

Didn't like the controls or their locations on the Delta Lathe, so I built this add-on pod. 5 preset speeds and one infinitely variable setting. Forward and Reverse, On and Off. Now I don't have to reach past a spinning workpiece to adjust the controls. Magnets and non-skid backing allows placement on any metal object.

RS-485 Interface
Programming the lathe controller

Addition of the controller pod required re-programming the OEM controller. So I built this interface out of junk box parts to do the job. For those inclined to follow suit, the schematic is on the electronics pages.
